Macross

Back in 1982 Studio Nue in Japan released a science-fiction space opera that is still with us today: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross.  Macross is a story with a love triangle of three people: Minmay, Hikaru, and Misa.  At first Hikaru and Misa did not get along while Minmay clung to Hikaru.  Haruhiko Mikimoto tackled the character designs.  Studio Nue took a concept they had developed in Orguss and Shoji Kawamori created the VF-1 Valkyries that transformed into fighter, GERWALK, and Battroid modes.  Toss in a giant warship of alien origins that crashed on Earth on a remote island. And then to make it all go, in 2009 a race of 50ft aliens attack earth for the warship.  The island is destroyed while the ship is forced to flee into space via space fold.  Needless to say this series was a huge hit while forver linking Mikimoto and Kwamori with it.

In 1984, Shoji Kawamori and Studio Nue got a chance to retell Macross with a movie budget.  What came out was Macross:Do You Remember Love.  When it comes to character designs, uniforms, and mecha designs; Kawamori considers this movie the real basis for Macross.  This movie was brought to the United States on VHS in a heavily edited form called Clash of the Bionids.

What came next was a one shot video called Macross Flashback 2012.  This video is a series of music videos of Lynn Minmay.  There was one original song along with many favorites on this video.  For the trivia hounds and gamers, in Flashback 2012 we are treated to the sole sighting of the VF-4 fighter.  This title was never officially brought to the United States but it can be found online or even on eBay.

I'm also a big fan of Macross as well. DYRL is still one of favorite anime movies. I've yet to see Flashback 2012 but it's on my watch list.
